Ceramic Shuaijiao Portrait

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Coach Ma Jianguo has been a student of Master Li Baoru since childhood. Like Master Li he is a pragmatic and sincere person with an intense passion for Shuaijiao and the Chinese culture. That passion is evident when you visit his house. Coach Ma collects all sorts of interesting and unique Chinese antiques and memorabilia including some interesting Shuaijiao pieces.

Some of the most impressive include: jade “zhi zi:”(dumbbell-like weights shaped like bricks), Shuaijiao paper cuts, intricately carved “da bang zi”(a baseball bat sized piece of wood that is used for developing power), jade statutes of Shuaijiao movements, and the images below cast in a ceramic portrait in traditional Chinese fashion.

Coach Ma has this on the wall facing the entrance to his apartment. It is an impressive reminder that you are entering the house of an accomplished wrestler.

There is a prize for those who know the names of each of these movements… not really, but think about it ☺

Enjoy

ps. if anyone can tell me who to watermark these i’d appreciate it :-) I use Aperture.

Brazilian Jiujitsu’s Shuaijiao Connection

Monday, January 28th, 2008

(thanks to a good Shuaijiao friend for making this post possible…i will keep you unnamed right now :-)  )

Chet Quint was the man responsible for introducing me to Shuaijiao. Read that story here.

He is a Shuaijiao black belt under Daniel Weng of Chang Dongsheng lineage. Before arriving in China he won his division in USA. He also has extensive experience using Shuaijiao in self-defense situations. Read about that here. Despite all these accomplishments, since arriving in China and having the privilege of learning under Master Li Baoru he has realized that there is so much more to learn.

In this article published in Kungfu Magazine – an outstanding publication dedicated to promoting and preserving the Chinese Martial Arts – Chet describes some of the similarities he has discovered between Shuaijiao and another art close to his heart: Brazilian Jujitsu.

Please read his article and share you comments in the comments section below.

(it might be best to save each picture and read full sized)

Keep Smilin’
Michael

P.s. if any of you dream to embark on a Shuaijiao adventure of a lifetime – like Chet and I - learning under one of the greatest living masters of Shuaijiao in China then the time is coming… keep watching!
